Brief overview of silverfish

Considered occasional invaders, silverfish often enter homes while foraging for food and suitable shelter. Interestingly enough, these pests can live for a year without food, but can only survive in environments with high humidity levels.

What do silverfish look like?

Silverfish have distinctive tear-drop bodies that are covered in silvery-gray scales. They move very quickly and in a manner that is often described as fish-like. Silverfish are wingless, have a long pair of antennae and three very long, bristle-like appendages protruding from their hind-end.

Where do silverfish nest?

Silverfish are frequently found in basements, kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms as well as other places where the humidity levels are high.

What do silverfish eat?

Silverfish love sugars and starches and will feed on carbohydrates. It’s also common for them to feed on and damage non-food items such as:

  • Cellulose
  • Wallpaper
  • Glue
  • Linens
  • Shampoo
  • Dead insects

Are silverfish dangerous?

Silverfish do not bite or sting, aren’t known to transmit diseases to people, and will not threaten the integrity of structures. They are considered nuisance pests when they infest homes and businesses, contaminate food sources, and damage personal belongings.
