Jumping Spiders

Brief overview of jumping spiders

Jumping spiders are unique in that they are active during the day and thrive in the sunlight. During the daylight hours, jumping spiders have excellent eyesight and can see movement up to 18 inches away. This ability makes them very successful predators.

What do jumping spiders look like?

Jumping spiders are fairly dull in color and may appear black, tan, brown or gray. They usually have pale or white markings on their bodies and legs. They have compact bodies, and eight short powerful legs that allow them to jump several times their body length.

Where do jumping spiders nest?

Jumping spiders don’t create webs like many other types of spiders, but they do use their silk to mark areas that they can hide and nest in and to protect their eggs with. Outside jumping spiders live in tall grasses, dense vegetation, and underneath loose bark. These spiders do not usually seek out indoor shelter but are often brought inside accidentally on packages, potted plants, and on people. Inside jumping spiders may be found hiding underneath furniture, in the cracks of floors, behind window and doors moldings, and between books.

What do jumping spiders eat?

Jumping spiders feed on a wide variety of insects that they find in the grasslands and prairies that they inhabit. Some of the jumping spider's favorite food sources include:

  • Bollworms
  • Cotton leaf worms
  • Stink bugs
  • Mosquitoes
  • Webworms

Are jumping spiders dangerous?

Though they are technically venomous, jumping spiders are not considered dangerous. Their venom is not generally strong enough to harm people. Also, jumping spiders are more likely to flee or jump away when threatened.
