One of the most frustrating pests to invade your home is the flea. Once these tiny, parasitic pests find their way into your home, they can be very difficult to get rid of. Fleas reproduce quickly, they can invade your entire home, and they have a hard shell that makes them almost impossible to squish. The best defense against fleas is creating a great offense and doing everything you can to prevent them from finding their way inside of your home in the first place!

In order to keep fleas from invading your home, you need to understand the most common ways that fleas get onto properties and inside homes. It is important to note that while flea infestations are most often associated with homeowners who have pets; homeowners without pets can also experience a flea infestation! The most common way that fleas enter our properties is on wild animals. As wildlife like squirrels, deer, mice, skunks, and groundhogs travel across your yard, some of the fleas living on their body drop off into your yard. They eventually jump onto a new host, which, unfortunately, could be you, your kids, or your pets. Fleas could enter your home after purchasing used furniture, clothing, and/or rugs that are infested with adults or eggs. Also, if you move into a new home or apartment and the previous renter’s pets were infested with fleas, flea eggs could have been left behind which will hatch and cause an infestation.

Now that you know a little bit more about how these blood-feeding pests can find their way into your home, Adams Exterminating Company wants to provide you with our top five prevention tips to help avoid an infestation.

  1. If you own pets that spend time both inside and outside your home, make sure that they are up-to-date on their flea prevention. If they currently aren’t on a flea preventative, talk with their veterinarian about which is best for them.
  2. Vacuum your rugs and floors often; pay special attention to areas where your pets most often spend their time.
  3. Change and wash pet beds routinely, don’t let pets sleep on beds; but if you can’t sleep soundly without Fluffy or Oreo, make sure to wash your bedding often!
  4. Inspect yourself, your pets, and your kids for fleas before coming inside after spending time outside.
  5. Do not place bird feeders or other types of wildlife feeders on your property.
